Although they are quickly becoming extremely popular on the market LED lights have been something of a puzzle for consumers. Most people understand that they are better in someway, however the initial cost, which has decreased, is something that often will turn people away. If you understand some of the basics and look closely at the numbers it is easy to undersand that LED lights are a vastly superior option.
For starters, LED lights, which have been around since the early 1960s, were fist created as a way to deal with energy expense and heat. Engeneers needed a bulb for an indicator light on display panels that could serve as a better option compared to the traditional incandescent bulb. The result was the first red LED lights.
These bulbs are not only better in energy consumption, they are increadible in their durability. Because they are not built with a filament, something that standard lighting does have, they can last for an amazing amount of time. The standard incandescent bulb has a general life span of about 750 hours. This is about the same amount of time as running the light for a month strait. The alternative to this bulb for a while was the compact fluorescent, which is superior in that it has a life time usage of about 10,000 hours. That is like running the light for over a year without turning it off. LED lights however can last a profound amount of time in comparison, lasting as long as 100,000 hours. That is the same as running it for over 11 and a half years without tuning the light off.

In addition to their longevity they are also much more energy efficient. In order to have enough light to read by you would likely need a 40 watt incandescent light bulb. To get the same amount of illumination from LED lights you would only need to produce 1.5 watts of electricity. That is a huge potential savings if you were to use LED lights as replacement bulbs all through out your home.
For many customers it is the actual upfront cost that scares them away. However, if you break it down to real comparable numbers you will quickly see the large benefits that LED lights offer. The basic incandescent bulb has an average retail price of about $1.99. LED lights have a cost of about $20 a piece. Although this seems like a lot at first, if you consider how many incandescent you will need to purchase to last as long as one LED the numbers switch. The traditional bulbs would end up costing you over $250 over the lifespan of LED lights.
LED lights are much more cost effective not just in the long term, but also with monthly energy costs. Although the initial expense may be more, ultimately it is worth it.
